The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah was not simply an agreement between Quraysh and the Muslims. It was one of the most remarkable events in Islamic history—an example of wisdom, patience, and faith in Allah’s promise.
Background of the Treaty
In the 6th year after Hijrah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) and 1,400 companions set out from Madinah to perform Umrah. They were unarmed and came only as pilgrims. However, Quraysh refused to allow them entry into Makkah.
After tense negotiations, a treaty was written. To many companions, the terms seemed harsh and humiliating:
Muslims would return to Madinah without performing Umrah that year.
They could return the following year for only three days.
Any Makkan who accepted Islam and fled to Madinah would be returned to Quraysh, but if any Muslim left Islam and went to Quraysh, Quraysh would not return him.
Omar ibn Al-Khattab could hardly contain his frustration, and even Abu Bakr struggled to understand why the Prophet accepted such conditions.
But the Prophet showed complete trust in Allah. He said, “By Allah, He will never let me down.”
The Reaction of Umm Salamah
When the Prophet returned to his tent, saddened by the grief of his companions, he consulted his wife Umm Salamah. Her wisdom was a turning point. She said:
“O Messenger of Allah, go out and do not speak to any of them until you have slaughtered your sacrifice and called your barber to shave your head.”
The Prophet followed her advice. He went out, slaughtered his sacrifice, and had his head shaved. When the companions saw this, they followed his example without hesitation, and their sorrow lifted.
Quranic Revelation
After the treaty was signed, Allah revealed:
“Indeed, We have given you a clear conquest.”
(Quran 48:1)
To the companions, it did not feel like victory. But Allah named it a clear conquest, because it truly was.
The Fruits of Hudaybiyyah
It established peace that allowed Islam to spread faster than ever before.
Within two years, more people embraced Islam than in all the years before.
It demonstrated the power of patience and wisdom over anger and pride.
It showed that the Prophet cared more for long-term benefit and guidance than short-term emotion.
Quranic Lessons We Learn
Patience Brings Victory
Even when events seem against us, Allah is in control.
“And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect.”
(Quran 65:2-3)
Trust in Allah’s Plan
The companions did not see victory at first, but Allah’s wisdom was greater.
“It may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you.”
(Quran 2:216)
Peace Can Be a Path to Strength
By agreeing to the treaty, the Muslims demonstrated maturity and strength, not weakness.
Humility Over Ego
The Prophet accepted conditions others thought humiliating. He cared only for what pleased Allah.
Reflections for Today
Are we patient in hardship, trusting that Allah’s plan is better than our understanding?
Do we value wisdom over pride?
Do we teach our children that success is not always immediate—but always promised to those who remain firm?
Do we appreciate the importance of calm advice like that of Umm Salamah, whose words guided the community back to unity?
