“Say: Are those who know equal to those who do not know?”
A Qur’anic question that stirs the hearts and reshapes true values
This Qur’anic question is not posed to seek an answer—
for its answer is already settled in human nature before it reaches the tongue.
Rather, it is a question meant to awaken hearts, distinguish between paths, and restore the true scale by which human worth is measured.
It is a question that reorders concepts,
demolishes false standards that people have grown accustomed to,
and clearly declares that true distinction is not based on wealth, status, or power,
but on knowledge that enlightens the mind and revives the heart.

Knowledge in the Qur’an is not a luxury
When Allah speaks of knowledge, He does not present it as intellectual ornamentation or cultural prestige,
but as the foundation of guidance, the path to salvation, and the cause of elevation in this life and the next.
Allah says:
“Allah raises those who believe among you and those who have been given knowledge in ranks.”
Thus, knowledge in the Qur’anic scale is a responsibility before it is an honor,
and a duty before it is a status.
Who are “those who know” in the sight of Allah?
Not everyone who memorizes, reads, or speaks is truly knowledgeable.
The knowledge that the Qur’an recognizes is knowledge that:
Produces reverence and humility in the heart
Governs behavior and conduct
Guides toward the truth
Protects its bearer from confusion and following desire
That is why Allah says:
“Only those of His servants who truly fear Allah are the people of knowledge.”
Reverence is the fruit of true knowledge.
And knowledge that does not lead to reverence and uprightness is not beneficial knowledge.
And what about those who do not know?
Ignorance is not merely a lack of information;
it is darkness that confuses the path,
often leading to wasted effort,
misunderstanding,
and error—despite good intentions.
The one who does not know:
May be sincere, yet worship Allah without insight
May strive, yet fail to distinguish truth from falsehood
May have good intentions, yet fall into incorrect action
This is why knowledge is a necessity, not a choice.
Why can they never be equal?
They are not equal because:
One walks with light, while the other stumbles in darkness
One knows why he acts, while the other acts without awareness
One weighs matters by revelation, while the other weighs them by habit or desire
How could the one who knows the path
be equal to the one who walks it without a map?
The message of the verse for us today
This verse is not meant only for reflection,
but for redirection.
It clearly calls us to:
Seek knowledge
Understand the religion
Exit the circle of ignorance and heedlessness
Move from emotional worship to conscious, informed worship
For Allah is not worshiped except with knowledge,
nor obeyed except with understanding,
and hearts are not protected except through insight.
Knowledge: a path to elevation and tranquility
Knowledge does not merely give answers;
it grants:
Steadfastness during trials
Calmness in moments of confusion
A scale for judging differences
Clarity in worship and daily life
Whoever tastes the sweetness of knowledge
understands why Allah distinguished between those who know and those who do not.
