The Poet of Jurisprudence, Reviver of the Century, and Imam of Balance
In a nation rich with scholars and renewers, Imam Al-Shafi‘i stood out with a unique blend of sharp intellect, eloquence, and precise legal understanding.
He is Imam Muhammad ibn Idris Al-Shafi‘i, one of the four great Imams and the founder of the Shafi‘i school of thought—a balanced and structured methodology that harmonized the schools of Hadith (in Madinah) and rational deduction (in Iraq).

🌿 Humble Beginnings: Poverty and Purpose
Born in Gaza in 150 AH—the same year Imam Abu Hanifa passed away—Imam Al-Shafi‘i moved with his mother to Makkah after his father’s death.
Despite his poverty, his heart was rich with the love of knowledge. He used to write on bones and leather scraps due to the lack of paper. He once said:
> "I would hear something once and remember it exactly."
By the age of 10, he had memorized the entire Qur’an. By 15, he had memorized Imam Malik’s Muwatta’, and traveled to Madinah to study under him.

📘 Meeting Imam Malik
Imam Malik was known for his dignity and high standards, and wouldn’t teach just anyone. When he heard Al-Shafi‘i read, he remarked:
> "If Allah grants this boy success, he will have great status."
Al-Shafi‘i became one of his closest students and absorbed the discipline of Hadith and the reverence for Sunnah.

✨ His Journey Through Knowledge
After Imam Malik’s death, Al-Shafi‘i traveled to Yemen, then to Iraq, where he engaged deeply with the students of Abu Hanifa.
Later, he moved to Egypt, where he revised and completed his new legal methodology—documented in his famous book “Al-Umm”.

💡 Notable Incidents and Wisdom
🔹 A man once asked him: “Which is better: Jihad or seeking knowledge?”
He replied:
> “Knowledge, for it teaches you the value of Jihad.”
🔹 He would say:
> “Had I desired worldly gain, I would have sought it through other doors—not through knowledge.”
🔹 Once, during a heated debate, he told his opponent:
> “Can’t we still be brothers, even if we disagree on a matter?
This was the grace of scholars.

📚 His Legacy in Knowledge
Imam Al-Shafi‘i is considered the founder of Usul al-Fiqh (Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence). His book “Al-Risalah” is the first to codify the methodology of deriving Islamic law.
His framework of legal sources includes:
✅ The Qur’an
✅ Authentic Hadith
✅ Ijma‘ (Consensus)
✅ Qiyas (Analogy)
He also applied precision in Arabic linguistics and distinguished between custom, necessity, and context.

📝 What Scholars Said About Him
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal said:
> “Al-Shafi‘i was like the sun for the earth, and health for the body.”
Yunus ibn Abd al-A‘la said:
> “I’ve never met someone more intelligent. He would debate calmly, never raising his voice, and never showing anger.”

🕊️ His Passing
He passed away in Egypt in 204 AH. His tomb remains a landmark of Islamic heritage. One of his final words was:
> “I wish that people learned this knowledge without attributing any of it to me.”
