The Companions… and Ramadan with the Qur’an
How Did They Live the Month?
For the Companions, Ramadan was not a passing season.
It was not a temporary schedule of worship.
It was a complete state of closeness to Allah.
When Ramadan arrived… everything changed.
1️⃣ ʿUthman ibn ʿAffan (رضي الله عنه)
A Man Who Completed the Qur’an in a Single Night
When Ramadan began, ʿUthman (رضي الله عنه) would increase his recitation tremendously.
It was reported that he would complete the entire Qur’an in a single rak‘ah during night prayer.
Imagine…
A long, still night.
Calm recitation.
A present heart.
It was not merely about quantity —
it was love.
For him, the Qur’an was not an obligation…
it was companionship.
2️⃣ ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud (رضي الله عنه)
Reciting as He Heard It from the Prophet ﷺ
Ibn Masʿud was among the strongest in attachment to the Qur’an.
He once said:
“By Allah, I learned over seventy surahs directly from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
In Ramadan,
he would recite with deep reflection,
often moving listeners to tears.
He lived with the verses.
He paused at them.
He absorbed them.
The Qur’an was not a rushed reading…
it was life itself.
3️⃣ Imam Al-Shafi‘i (from the generation after the Companions)
Sixty Completions in Ramadan
It is reported that Imam Al-Shafi‘i completed the Qur’an sixty times in Ramadan.
Reflect on that discipline.
It was not just about numbers —
it was about consistent daily structure.
For them, Ramadan
was a season of elevation.
4️⃣ Night Prayer… The School of the Companions
They would stand long hours in prayer during Ramadan.
It was said that they would lean on sticks from the length of their standing.
They would only finish shortly before Fajr.
Their worship was not performance…
it was longing.
What Do We Learn from Them?
The Qur’an was not seasonal in their lives.
But Ramadan intensified their relationship with it.
More recitation.
More night prayer.
More reflection.
Ramadan was their spiritual recharge.
What Is the Difference Between Us and Them?
They lived with the Qur’an all year.
Ramadan simply brought them closer.
We, however,
often wait for Ramadan to begin.
So the real question is:
Why not make Ramadan
the beginning of a lasting relationship?
