The Quran is not only a guide for the soul but a guide for how to live in harmony with the world Allah created. The earth, sky, water, plants, and animals are all signs of Allah’s power and mercy—gifts that deserve respect and protection.
Creation as a Trust
Allah says:
"It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth."
(Quran 2:29)
This trust is an amanah—a responsibility. We are stewards (khalifah) of this earth. Every action we take—how we use water, how we treat animals, how we care for land—reflects our gratitude or our neglect.
Balance and Moderation
"And the sky He raised and set the balance. So do not transgress within the balance."
(Quran 55:7-8)
This balance—mizan—is not only physical but moral. When we overconsume, waste, or harm nature, we violate that balance.
The Prophet’s ﷺ Model of Environmental Care
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed the highest respect for the environment:
He commanded that water should never be wasted, even while making ablution at a flowing river.
He prohibited killing animals or cutting trees without need.
He encouraged compassion, saying:
"Whoever is kind to the creatures of God, he is kind to himself."
He said that planting a tree or cultivating the land is an act of continuous charity (sadaqah jariyah).
Quranic Principles That Guide Us
1. Avoid Wastefulness "Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils."
(Quran 17:27)
Islam teaches us that every blessing must be valued.
2. Do Not Corrupt the Earth "And do not cause corruption upon the earth after its reformation."
(Quran 7:56)
Deforestation, pollution, and exploitation are forms of fasad.
3. Mercy for All Creatures "And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision."
(Quran 11:6)
Every living being is part of Allah’s creation and deserves care.
4. Reflection and Gratitude Allah invites us to reflect on nature: "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding."
(Quran 3:190)
Observing nature strengthens faith and gratitude.
Environmental Responsibility in Modern Times
Today, the world faces environmental crises—climate change, plastic waste, extinction of species. The Quran offers solutions grounded in respect and moderation.
Reduce consumption
Avoid pollution
Protect animals and ecosystems
Teach children to love and care for Allah’s creation
Questions to Reflect On
Do we treat water, land, and resources as amanah?
Are we teaching the next generation that caring for the environment is part of Islam?
Do we remember that small acts—saving water, planting a tree, recycling—can be acts of worship?
