Zakat Al-Fitr: Ruling, Amount, and the Correct Time to Pay Before Eid
Zakat Al-Fitr: The Charity That Completes the Blessings of Ramadan
As the blessed month of Ramadan comes to an end, Islam prescribes a beautiful act of worship known as Zakat Al-Fitr. This charity is not simply a voluntary donation; it is an obligatory act of worship that completes the spiritual journey of Ramadan and expresses gratitude to Allah for the blessing of fasting.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The Messenger of Allah obligated Zakat Al-Fitr as purification for the fasting person from idle talk and improper behavior, and as food for the poor.”
This hadith beautifully summarizes the wisdom behind this important act of worship.
Why Was Zakat Al-Fitr Prescribed?
Zakat Al-Fitr carries profound wisdom that combines spiritual purification with social compassion.
1. Purification of the Fasting Person
During Ramadan, a person may unintentionally fall into mistakes such as unnecessary speech or minor shortcomings.
Zakat Al-Fitr serves as a purification that completes and perfects the fast.
2. Bringing Joy to the Poor on Eid
Eid is a day of happiness for Muslims. Islam encourages that everyone in the community shares this joy, including those who are less fortunate.
Through Zakat Al-Fitr, the poor are provided with food so they can celebrate Eid without hardship.
3. Expressing Gratitude to Allah
After completing a full month of fasting and worship, Muslims express gratitude to Allah by giving charity to those in need.
Who Must Pay Zakat Al-Fitr?
Zakat Al-Fitr is obligatory upon every Muslim who has enough food for the day and night of Eid.
It is required for:
Men and women
Adults and children
The elderly
The head of the household usually pays it on behalf of themselves and those under their care, such as their spouse and children.
The Amount of Zakat Al-Fitr
The amount prescribed by the Prophet ﷺ is:
One “Saa’” of staple food.
This is approximately equivalent to:
2.5 to 3 kilograms of food.
Examples of food commonly given include:
Rice
Wheat
Dates
Barley
Any staple food commonly eaten in the country
When Should Zakat Al-Fitr Be Given?
The best time to give Zakat Al-Fitr is:
Before the Eid prayer.
It is also permissible to give it one or two days before Eid, as practiced by the companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
If it is given after the Eid prayer, it will be considered a regular charity rather than Zakat Al-Fitr.
The True Meaning of Zakat Al-Fitr
Zakat Al-Fitr is more than a simple donation of food. It carries a powerful message:
The Muslim community supports and cares for its members.
Worship in Islam is deeply connected with compassion and generosity.
The end of Ramadan should be marked with gratitude, charity, and kindness.
It is one of the most beautiful examples of mercy and social solidarity in Islam.
A Message After Ramadan
As Ramadan ends and Eid arrives, an important question remains:
Will our connection with the Qur’an continue after Ramadan?
Ramadan reminds us that the Qur’an is the source of guidance in a Muslim’s life. Learning to read, understand, and memorize the Qur’an is one of the greatest investments a Muslim can make.
For this reason, Madrasat Al-Quran offers structured programs for learning Qur’an recitation, Tajweed, and memorization with qualified teachers, helping Muslims around the world strengthen their connection with the Qur’an—not only in Ramadan, but throughout the entire year
