The Closest a Servant Is to His Lord Is While Prostrating
A Moment Unlike Any Other
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The closest a servant is to his Lord is while he is in prostration, so increase your supplication.”
— Narrated by Muslim
A short hadith…
Yet its meaning shakes the heart.
The Prophet ﷺ did not say the servant is closest while standing,
nor while reciting,
nor while delivering a sermon…
He said: while prostrating.
That moment when a person places the most honored part of their body — their face — upon the ground,
declaring that they are a servant… weak… in complete need.
Why Is Prostration the Closest Position?
Because sujood combines two عظيمة realities:
1️⃣ The highest level of humility
2️⃣ The greatest level of nearness
The lower your body falls before Allah,
the higher your soul rises toward Him.
This is why the Prophet ﷺ would lengthen his prostration
and make abundant supplication within it.
Prostration in the Lives of the Companions
The Companions did not see sujood as a movement.
They saw it as refuge.
Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) would weep in prayer until his sobbing was heard,
and he would find his deepest closeness to Allah in sujood.
‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), whenever faced with hardship, would say:
“To prayer.”
Then he would prostrate for a long time, privately conversing with his Lord.
It was said about them:
“When something troubled them, they prolonged their prostration.”
As for ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him),
when prayer time arrived, his face would change color and he would say:
“The time of the trust has come.”
His prostration was a station of awe and love together.
Sujood was not habit for them.
It was life.
“So Increase in Supplication…”
The Prophet ﷺ did not merely inform us of closeness —
he directed us:
“So increase your supplication.”
As if saying:
This is an open moment —
do not waste it.
In sujood:
There are no barriers.
No formalities.
No memorized performance.
Only your heart… and your Lord.
The Secret of Powerful Prostration
True sujood is not about length alone —
it is about presence.
Some prostrate for only seconds,
yet their hearts knock powerfully on the gates of heaven.
Others prolong it,
while their hearts are distracted.
Closeness is not measured by time —
but by sincerity.
Between Prostration and Supplication… Answers Are Written
When you prostrate:
Call upon Allah by the Name that suits your need.
Praise Him first.
Send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
Then ask with certainty.
And do not rush.
Perhaps one prostration changes destiny.
Perhaps one supplication in the darkness of night brings light to an entire lifetime.
Conclusion… Where True Nearness Begins
If the closest a servant is to his Lord is in sujood,
then the real question is not: Do we prostrate?
But: How do we prostrate?
Do we prostrate with hearts that understand what they recite?
Or with tongues repeating what they do not comprehend?
Sujood is not a physical movement.
It is the fruit of understanding, humility, and long companionship with the Qur’an.
This is why the Companions reached the highest levels of closeness in their prostration —
because they were the closest to the Words of Allah.
Every verse they heard
turned into supplication in their sujood.
Every Name of Allah
lived in their hearts before leaving their tongues.
This Is Where the Difference Begins
When you understand the Qur’an,
your prostration changes.
When you master your recitation,
your heart becomes present.
When you live with the meanings,
your supplication transforms.
This is our mission.
At Madrasat Al-Quran, we do not simply teach reading.
We help you:

Taste the beauty of Allah’s Names you call upon.
Recite with confidence so you can humble yourself sincerely.
Build a lasting relationship with the Qur’an — not a seasonal one.
We believe deep prostration does not happen by accident.
It is built through knowledge, companionship, and guided practice.
