Zakah is an obligatory act of worship and the third pillar of Islam. Its obligation is established through the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus.
Allah says:
“Establish prayer and give zakah.”
The obligation of zakah is considered a matter known necessarily in Islam. Therefore:
Whoever denies its obligation out of rejection commits disbelief.
Whoever withholds it out of miserliness while acknowledging its obligation commits a major sin and is subject to legal accountability.
Zakah is not optional charity. It is a binding financial duty upon eligible Muslims.
Second: The Virtues of Zakah
1. Spiritual Purification
Zakah purifies the soul from greed and strengthens sincerity in worship.
2. Blessing of Wealth
Paying zakah does not decrease wealth in reality. Rather, it brings divine blessing and protection.
3. Social Justice
Zakah supports the poor, reduces inequality, and reinforces social solidarity.
4. Strengthening the Ummah
By redistributing wealth lawfully, zakah preserves economic balance within the Muslim community.
Third: The Consequences of Neglecting Zakah
The Qur’an warns those who withhold zakah of severe punishment. This emphasizes that zakah is a serious obligation, not a minor recommendation.
