First: What Is Tayammum?
Linguistic Meaning
Tayammum means intention and deliberate direction.
Islamic Definition
Tayammum is wiping the face and hands with clean earth, with the intention of purification, as a substitute for wudu or ghusl when using water is not possible.
In other words, tayammum is a legitimate Islamic substitute for purification with water — not a lesser option, but a valid form of worship when required.
Second: The Legitimacy of Tayammum
Tayammum is established by the Qur’an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus.
Allah says:
“But if you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth.”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The earth has been made for me a place of prayer and a means of purification.”
This shows:
The mercy of Islam
The removal of hardship
The ease Allah grants His servants in worship
Third: When Is Tayammum Permissible?
Tayammum is allowed in specific situations, including:
1) Absence of water
Whether during travel or at home.
2) Inability to use water
Such as:
Illness
Fear that water will worsen the condition
Presence of wounds or burns
3) Fear of harm from using water
Whether definite harm or strong likelihood.
4) Scarcity of water with a need for drinking
Especially during travel.
Fourth: What Is “Clean Earth” (Ṣa‘īd Ṭayyib)?
Ṣa‘īd refers to anything from the earth that has dust.
Such as:
Soil
Sand
Stone
Unpainted walls
On the condition that it is pure and clean.
Fifth: How to Perform Tayammum
The method of tayammum is simple:
Make the intention in the heart
Strike the earth once
Wipe the face
Wipe the hands
This is the preferred opinion of many scholars.
Sixth: What Does Tayammum Remove?
Tayammum removes:
Minor ritual impurity
Major ritual impurity
It allows:
Prayer
Recitation of the Qur’an
Tawaf
As long as the reason for tayammum still exists.
Seventh: What Invalidates Tayammum?
Tayammum is invalidated by:
Finding water while being able to use it
The removal of the excuse that allowed tayammum
Anything that invalidates wudu also invalidates tayammum
Eighth: An Important Jurisprudential Principle
What is permitted due to necessity is limited to the extent of that necessity.
This means tayammum remains valid only while the excuse exists. Once the excuse ends, the ruling returns to purification with water.
