Siwak
First: What Is Siwak?
Linguistic Meaning
Siwak means rubbing and cleaning.
Islamic Definition
Siwak is the use of a stick or any similar tool to clean the teeth and mouth, seeking cleanliness and the pleasure of Allah.
In other words, siwak is an act of worship before it is a habit.
Second: The Virtue of Siwak
Siwak holds a great status in Islam.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Siwak purifies the mouth and pleases the Lord.”
He also said:
“Had I not feared hardship for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use siwak before every prayer.”
This shows:
Its great reward
The Prophet’s strong emphasis on it
That it is an easy and repeated act of worship
Third: The Ruling of Siwak
The ruling of siwak is: a highly recommended Sunnah.
It is recommended at all times, and its recommendation is emphasized at specific moments.
Fourth: When Is Siwak Recommended?
Siwak is especially recommended:
During wudu
Before prayer
When reciting the Qur’an
Upon waking up
When the smell of the mouth changes
Before entering the home
Fifth: Is Siwak Limited to the Arak Stick?
The best type of siwak is the Arak stick, because:
It is mentioned in the Sunnah
It is beneficial for the teeth
It is natural and safe
However, it is permissible to use:
A toothbrush
Any tool that cleans the mouth and teeth
As long as the purpose of cleaning is achieved.
Sixth: Siwak for the Fasting Person
It is permissible for a fasting person to use siwak at any time during the day,
and it does not invalidate the fast, whether:
Before noon
Or after noon
The strongest opinion is that siwak is allowed for the fasting person at all times.
Seventh: How to Use Siwak
It is recommended to:
Start with the right side
Clean the teeth and gums gently
Avoid excessive force
Wash the siwak after use
