Mistakes That Weaken Your Recitation Without You Realizing It
Many of us recite the Quran daily —
in prayer, after Fajr, or before sleeping.
But a question we rarely ask ourselves is:
Am I reciting correctly?
The truth is, some mistakes may remain with a reader for years —
not because they do not care,
but because they have never been corrected.
The most dangerous part is that these mistakes become habits,
and habits eventually turn into a fixed style that becomes harder to change over time.
Here are three of the most common mistakes:
1. Uncontrolled Elongation (Madd)
Elongation in the Quran is not about beautifying the voice,
nor is it a personal choice.
It follows precise, defined rules.
Some readers:
Extend sounds that should not be extended
Shorten required elongations
Overstretch vowels until they distort the rhythm
Excessive elongation disrupts balance.
Insufficient elongation removes the letter’s right.
Accurate recitation is built on discipline — not emotion alone.
2. Weak Letter Articulation (Makharij)
Some of the most frequent mistakes involve deeper or heavier letters such as:
Dhad (ض)
Qaf (ق)
Haa (ح)
Taa (ط)
Confusing Dhad with Dha can change meaning.
Pronouncing Qaf lightly makes it resemble Kaf.
Failing to properly emphasize heavy letters weakens the dignity of the recitation.
Proper articulation cannot be mastered by reading alone.
It requires guided correction and live feedback.
3. Speed That Removes the Spirit of Recitation
Many people feel accomplished when they finish a page quickly.
But the Quran was not revealed to be rushed.
Allah says:
“And recite the Quran with measured recitation.”
Measured recitation means:
Slowness
Clarity
Giving each letter its due
Presence of heart
Excessive speed causes:
Weak shaddah (double letters)
Blurred vowel sounds
Loss of spiritual depth
It turns worship into routine reading.
A Fourth Mistake Many Overlook
Relying on memory without review.
Some memorisers repeat surahs from memory for years without presenting them to a qualified teacher.
Over time, small unnoticed mistakes accumulate —
and eventually become fixed patterns.
Why Correction Matters So Much
Because the Quran is the speech of Allah.
Because excellence in recitation is an act of worship.
Because correct recitation brings:
Confidence
Deeper humility in prayer
Clearer understanding
Stronger spiritual presence
Correction is not a sign of weakness.
It is a sign of seriousness.
