Night Journey (Isra and Mi’raj) – Quranic Significance
The Night Journey (Isra and Mi’raj) is one of the most miraculous, awe-inspiring events in the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It was a journey beyond the limits of space and time, revealing the greatness of Allah and the honored status of His final Messenger.
What Happened During Isra and Mi’raj?
In a single night, Allah took the Prophet ﷺ:
From Masjid al-Haram in Makkah
To Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem
And then through the seven heavens
On this journey, the Prophet met many prophets:
Adam in the first heaven
Yahya (John) and Isa (Jesus) in the second
Yusuf (Joseph) in the third
Idris (Enoch) in the fourth
Harun (Aaron) in the fifth
Musa (Moses) in the sixth
Ibrahim (Abraham) in the seventh
He was shown the wonders of Paradise and the punishment of the disbelievers. And finally, he reached a place beyond which no creation had ever been—the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary (Sidrat al-Muntaha).
There, Allah obligated the five daily prayers. Initially, fifty prayers were commanded, but through the intercession of Musa, they were reduced to five—yet the reward remained as fifty.
Quranic Verses about Isra and Mi’raj
1. Surah Al-Isra (17:1):
This verse explicitly describes the journey from Makkah to Jerusalem.
2. Surah An-Najm (53:13-18):
These verses refer to the ascension and the vision of the greatest signs near Sidrat al-Muntaha.
"He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord."
(Quran 53:18)
Deeper Quranic Significance
Validation of the Prophet’s Message:
This miracle was an undeniable proof that Muhammad ﷺ was a true Messenger.
Connection of Prophetic Heritage:
All prophets share one message: Tawheed (Oneness of Allah). Isra linked the sacred sites of the past to the final revelation.
Elevation of Salah:
No other act of worship was ordained in the heavens. This is why prayer holds such a central role in Islam.
Demonstration of Allah’s Might:
Allah is not bound by time, distance, or human limitations.
Spiritual Wisdom
Isra and Mi’raj was a gift that came after profound sorrow. The Prophet had just lost Khadijah (his beloved wife) and Abu Talib (his protector). In this period of grief, Allah lifted His Messenger to the highest ranks of honor, teaching us:
When you are broken, turn to Allah.
After the darkest nights come the brightest dawns.
Lessons for Every Believer
Trust in Allah’s Wisdom:
Even when the world denies you, Allah knows your worth.
Closeness to Allah is the ultimate honor:
Material power fades, but nearness to Allah remains.
Salah is your mi’raj:
Each prayer is a spiritual ascent and connection with the Lord of the Worlds.
Believe beyond logic:
The disbelievers mocked this miracle, but the believers accepted it with faith.
