Invalidators of Prayer

The Chapter of Prayer

Invalidators of Prayer

After learning about:

The conditions of prayer

Its pillars

Its obligations

Its Sunnahs

We now move to the invalidators of prayer,

which are the matters that, if they occur during the prayer, render it invalid.

Knowing these invalidators is very important,

so that a Muslim can preserve the correctness of their prayer.

First: What Are the Invalidators of Prayer?

The invalidators of prayer are: Actions or statements that, if they occur during prayer,

lead to its corruption and invalidity,

and the worshipper must repeat the prayer.

Second: The Main Invalidators of Prayer

1) Intentionally Leaving a Pillar of Prayer

Such as:

Leaving the bowing

Leaving the prostration

Not reciting Al-Fatihah

Prayer is not valid without its pillars.

2) Leaving a Condition of Prayer

Such as:

Praying without wudu

Praying with impurity present

Praying before the prayer time begins

In such cases, the prayer is not valid from the start.

3) Eating or Drinking Intentionally

If a person eats or drinks during prayer:

The prayer becomes invalid

Even if the amount is small

4) Speaking Intentionally

Speech that is not part of the prayer:

Invalidates the prayer if done intentionally

Such as responding to someone or talking during prayer

5) Laughing Out Loud

If the worshipper laughs audibly:

The prayer becomes invalid

However, smiling without sound:

Does not invalidate the prayer

6) Excessive Continuous Movement

Such as:

Walking many steps without need

Repeated unnecessary movements

Excessive movement that removes the form of prayer invalidates it.

7) Exposure of the ‘Awrah

If the ‘awrah becomes uncovered during prayer:

And it is not covered immediately

The prayer becomes invalid

8) Ritual Impurity During Prayer

Such as:

Passing wind

Any act that breaks wudu

The prayer becomes invalid immediately.

9) Major Deviation from the Qiblah

If a person intentionally turns their body away from the qiblah:

The prayer becomes invalid

10) Apostasy

This is the greatest invalidator,

as no act of worship is valid with disbelief.

Third: When Must the Prayer Be Repeated?

The prayer must be repeated if:

One of the invalidators occurs intentionally

A condition of prayer is missing

A pillar is lost and not corrected

Common Questions

Does movement always invalidate prayer?

No.

Minor movement for a need does not invalidate the prayer.

Does smiling invalidate prayer?

No, as long as it is without sound.

If my wudu breaks during prayer, what should I do?

Stop the prayer

Perform wudu

Repeat the prayer from the beginning

Can invalidators be fixed with Sujood As-Sahw?

No.

If an invalidator occurs, the prayer is invalid and must be repeated.

Summary: Invalidators of Prayer

They are the matters that invalidate prayer

A Muslim must be careful to avoid them

If an invalidator occurs, the prayer must be repeated

Knowing them protects the prayer from invalidity

Madrasat Al-Quran
