Surah Al-Fatihah is not just a chapter we memorized in childhood.
It is the greatest chapter of the Quran, and it is recited in every single unit of prayer.
Because we repeat it so often, many people make mistakes without even realizing it.
Here are some of the most common mistakes:
1. Extending What Should Not Be Extended — or Shortening What Should Be Extended
Some people overly stretch the word:
“Al-hamdu”
Adding unnecessary elongation.
Or they shorten the required elongation in:
“Ad-daaalleen”
Elongations in Al-Fatihah have specific lengths. Increasing or reducing them affects the beauty and accuracy of the recitation.
2. Mispronouncing the Letter “Dhad” (ض)
Many people pronounce:
“Ad-dalleen”
As if it were “Az-zalleen” or “Ath-thalleen.”
The Arabic letter “Dhad” is unique and comes from one side of the tongue touching the upper molars. It requires proper training to pronounce correctly.
3. Changing Vowel Sounds
For example, some say:
“Iyyaki na‘budu”
With a kasrah (i sound) on the letter “kaf,” when the correct pronunciation is:
“Iyyaka na‘budu”
With a fat-hah (a sound).
Changing a single vowel can completely change the meaning.
4. Not Pronouncing Shaddah (Emphasis) Properly
In the words:
“Ar-Rahman”
“Ar-Raheem”
Some people do not emphasize the doubled letter properly.
The same applies to:
“Iyyaka”
The shaddah means the letter is doubled. It must be pronounced clearly as two letters, not one.
5. Reciting Too Quickly
One of the most common mistakes is rushing through Al-Fatihah without calmness or clarity.
Allah says:
“And recite the Quran with measured recitation.”
Measured recitation means giving each letter its full right with proper clarity and balance.
6. Weakening or Dropping the Hamzah
In the word:
“An‘amta”
Some people soften or drop the hamzah at the beginning, when it should be clearly pronounced.
Why Correcting Al-Fatihah Is So Important
Because it is:
A pillar of the prayer
Recited daily
The foundation of proper recitation
When Al-Fatihah is correct, the prayer is strengthened.
A Question to Reflect On
When was the last time someone corrected your recitation of Al-Fatihah?
Sometimes we recite it for years in the same way without review.
