Ashura – A Day of Patience, Deliverance, and Blessings
Ashura is the 10th day of the sacred month of Muharram. It is one of the greatest days of the year and one of the most beloved to the hearts of believers. This day combines the memory of victory for the believers and patience in the face of hardship, making it a timeless lesson in steadfastness, sincerity, and gratitude.
The History of Ashura
Ashura is an ancient day in the history of the prophets:
On this day, Allah saved Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, and his people from the tyranny of Pharaoh. Allah commanded them to cross the sea, and He drowned their enemy behind them.
On this day, Allah showed His power to rescue His sincere servants no matter how severe the trial.
When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, he found the Jews fasting Ashura in gratitude to Allah for this blessing. He ﷺ said:
"We have more right to Musa than they do,"
so he fasted it and encouraged his companions to fast it too.
The Virtue of Fasting Ashura
Fasting on Ashura carries immense virtue. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope Allah will expiate (the sins of) the previous year."
(Muslim)
This is from Allah’s mercy to His servants: He grants them seasons of forgiveness and elevation.
How to Fast Ashura
It is recommended to fast a day before or after it to differ from the Jews:
Fasting the 9th and 10th (Tasu’a and Ashura), or
The 10th and 11th.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"If I live until next year, I will surely fast the 9th day."
The Profound Meanings of Ashura
Gratitude: Thanking Allah for His victory and guidance.
Patience: Learning from the endurance of Musa and his people.
Following the Sunnah: Showing our loyalty to the Prophet ﷺ.
Purifying the Soul: Cultivating humility and reliance on Allah.
Blessings: Some narrations mention it is good to be generous to one’s family on this day.
Examples and Lessons
Musa stood before the sea and declared with certainty:
"No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."
(Quran 26:62)
A lesson for every believer: relief comes after hardship.
The Prophet ﷺ fasted this day in gratitude, showing that thanking Allah is a great act of worship.
