Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud: The Early Student of the Quran
Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud: The Early Student of the Quran
Among the first hearts to embrace Islam… among the first tongues to carry the Quran… among the first souls to live its light.
His Humble Beginning
Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه was a shepherd tending the sheep of Uqbah ibn Abi Mu’ait. One day, he met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with Abu Bakr الصديق رضي الله عنه. From that moment, his life transformed.
He said:
"I learned seventy surahs directly from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. No one knows them better than me."
A Man Chosen by Allah
He was among the earliest Muslims.
He was among the foremost memorizers of the Quran.
He witnessed the revelation with his own eyes and heard it with his own ears.
His recitation was praised by the Prophet ﷺ himself.
The Messenger ﷺ said:
"Whoever wants to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it as Ibn Umm Abd recites."
(Bukhari)
His Courage in Makkah
Ibn Mas’ud was the first man to recite the Quran publicly before the Quraysh. He recited Surah Ar-Rahman aloud by the Kaaba. They beat him until his face bled, but his heart never wavered. When he returned, the companions said:
"This is what we feared for you."
He replied with strength:
"By Allah, their hatred of the Quran is lighter to me than my love for its words."
His Knowledge and Humility
He was known for his deep understanding and wisdom. Umar ibn Al-Khattab رضي الله عنه said:
"By Allah, he is filled with knowledge."
He lived simply, never seeking wealth or fame. When he passed away, he left almost nothing behind but a legacy that would illuminate generations.
